Getting around Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka looks small on a map, but winding roads and slow trains mean journeys take time. Knowing the options helps you build a relaxed route.

About 4 minutes to read

By train

The hill-country line from Kandy through Nanu Oya to Ella is the most famous scenic route. Trains are slow and can run late, and reserved seats on popular services often sell out in high season.

By road

Expressways link the airport with Colombo and the south coast, and parts of the route towards Kandy, but most roads are two-lane and winding. Many visitors travel with a private car and driver for comfort and flexibility.

Short hops

Tuk-tuks are handy for short distances in towns. Agree the fare before you set off, or use a ride-hailing app where available.

Typical travel times

These are approximate and depend on traffic and stops.

  • Airport to Sigiriya: about 4 hours
  • Sigiriya to Kandy: about 3 hours
  • Kandy to Ella by train: about 6–7 hours
  • Ella to the south coast: about 4–5 hours
  • Galle to the airport: about 2.5 hours
